About this worksheet
What students practice
- Students identify testable cause-and-effect questions about electric and magnetic forces.
- Students use investigation data to choose variables, controls, and measurements.
- Students support a claim about forces across a gap with evidence from graphs.
How to use
Read the field journal aloud or have students read it independently. Discuss what was changed, what stayed the same, and what was measured before students answer.
Curriculum
NGSS standard covered
Ask questions about cause and effect in electric and magnetic forces between objects that are not touching.

The Storm-Cleared Field Journal
Use observations to ask cause-and-effect questions about forces across a gap.
Read the field journal
Read Jordan's notes. Then use the graphs to answer the questions.Jordan tested objects without letting them touch.
Jordan's Notes
11. After a storm, Jordan visited the cleared lacrosse field with a plastic comb, a wool cloth, tiny paper bits, a bar magnet, steel paper clips, and plastic washers. The field was dry when Jordan began. An adult checked the materials first.
22. On Monday, Jordan rubbed the comb with the cloth 10 times. Jordan held the comb above the paper bits without touching them and counted how many bits moved. Jordan kept the same comb, cloth, and number of paper bits. Jordan changed the gap between the comb and the paper. Jordan also tried one test at the 2 cm gap with a comb that was not rubbed.
33. On Tuesday, Jordan held the same bar magnet above six steel paper clips without touching them. Jordan changed the gap and counted how many clips moved. Jordan also held the magnet 1 centimeter above plastic washers. The washers were the same size as the clips. Jordan recorded the observations in the graphs.
44. Jordan's teacher said, “A useful science question names something you can change and something you can observe or measure. It should help you plan a fair test.” Jordan wanted to write new questions for the next field visit.
