The Blue Tape Line

Characters: MATEO, age 9; LUCIA, his little sister, age 6; PAPA

Scene 1 (A small bedroom with two beds. A strip of blue tape runs down the middle of the floor.)

MATEO: (pressing the tape flat) There. This side is mine, and that side is yours. No crossing the line!

LUCIA: (folding her arms) Fine. My side has the closet and the door.

MATEO: And my side has the window and the bookshelf. I win.

Scene 2 (That evening. Mateo stands by his bed, holding his toothbrush.)

MATEO: Lucia, I need to get to the bathroom. Can I please cross?

LUCIA: (smiling) That will cost you one bedtime story.

MATEO: (sighing) One story. Deal.

Scene 3 (The next morning. Lucia stands on her side, staring at the window.)

LUCIA: Mateo, the sun is coming up on your side. I can't see it from here.

MATEO: (looking at the tape, then at his sister) You know what? This line is more trouble than it's worth.

(He peels up the tape and rolls it into a ball.)

PAPA: (peeking in the door) What happened to the great wall?

LUCIA: We don't need it, Papa. Now we can both see the sunrise and both use the door.
