2What Is a Meteorologist?
A meteorologist is a scientist who studies the air and the weather. Some meteorologists work at weather offices or airports. Others explain the weather on TV. A forecast tells what the weather will probably be like in the next few days.

3Tools They Use
A thermometer measures how hot or cold the air is. A rain gauge collects rain so people can measure how much fell. An anemometer has small cups that spin in the wind. The faster the cups spin, the faster the wind is blowing.

4Looking From Above
Weather satellites circle high above Earth. They take pictures of clouds and storms. Radar can show where rain or snow is falling right now.

5Sidebar: Weather Balloons
In many places around the world, people send up weather balloons twice a day. Each balloon carries a small box of tools. The box sends facts about the air back to the ground.
