1The emergency room is the part of a hospital for people who are badly hurt or very sick and need help fast. Most emergency rooms are open all day and all night.

2When a patient arrives, a nurse asks questions and checks the patient's temperature and heartbeat. This step is called triage. The nurse decides who needs help first.

3Doctors and nurses work together as a team. Some patients need an X-ray, so they go to another part of the hospital (see Chapter 3).

4Sidebar: Did You Know?
Some patients ride to the hospital in an ambulance. The crew can call ahead so the emergency team is ready when they arrive.

Glossary

patient: a person who is getting care from a doctor or nurse

pharmacist: a person whose job is to prepare medicine

triage: sorting patients so the sickest people get help first

X-ray: a picture that shows the inside of the body, such as the bones
