Letterboxing: Follow the Clue and the Map
Use a clue and a park map to find a hidden box.
Read the article
Read the article. Then study the map of Willow Park.
Letterboxing: A Treasure Hunt Hobby
1Letterboxing is a hobby that mixes walking, art and puzzles. A letterbox is a small box hidden outdoors. Inside it, there is a notebook and a rubber stamp. Many letterboxers carve their own stamps, so each stamp shows a different picture.
2The hobby began long ago in Dartmoor, a wild and rocky part of England. Walkers there left notes and cards in a bottle for the next visitor to find. Over time, people added stamps and notebooks. Today, people hide letterboxes in parks in many countries.
3To find a letterbox, you follow a clue. Here is the clue for the box in Willow Park: "Start at the gate. Walk north to the oak tree. Then turn and walk east. Walk past the bench, and stop at the next landmark. The box is hidden behind it." On the map below, north is at the top and east is on the right.
4When you find the box, press its stamp into your own notebook. Then press your own stamp into the box's notebook. Try not to let other people see you open the box, because the hiding spot is meant to be a secret. Always put the box back exactly where you found it so the next letterboxer can find it, too.
