Samir's First Dive
On Saturday, Samir's swim class met at the community pool. His coach, Ms. Ortiz, said that today was the day for diving. Samir had butterflies in his stomach. He had practiced jumps and belly flops all week, but a real dive felt like a mountain to climb.
One by one, the other children walked to the end of the diving board and dove in. Splash! Splash! Splash! Soon it was Samir's turn. His knees turned to jelly as he stepped onto the board. The water below was as smooth as glass, and his heart pounded like a drum.
"Take a deep breath," said Ms. Ortiz. "Everyone is cheering for you." Samir looked at his friend Rosa, who gave him two thumbs up. The pool grew quiet. He bent his knees, raised his arms over his head, and sprang off the board.
For a moment, Samir was high above the water. Then he slid in with barely a ripple. When his head came up, the whole class clapped. Ms. Ortiz gave him a high five. Samir was walking on air as he climbed out of the pool.
