Sea Otters at Home in the Waves
Sea otters live in the cold waters along the coast of the North Pacific Ocean. They spend almost their whole lives in the sea. They eat there, sleep there, and even raise their young there.
Many sea animals stay warm with a thick layer of fat. Sea otters do not have one. Instead, they have very thick fur. The fur holds a layer of air close to the otter's skin, and the air keeps the cold water away. To keep their fur clean and fluffy, otters spend hours each day rubbing and licking it.
Sea otters are clever eaters. They dive to the sea floor to find crabs, clams, and sea urchins. Then they float on their backs at the surface to eat. An otter may rest a flat rock on its belly and bang a clam against the rock until the shell cracks open.
Sea otters sleep floating on their backs, too. An otter may wrap itself in kelp, a tall sea plant, so the waves cannot carry it away. A mother otter also carries her pup on her belly while she floats.
