The Pineapple Jam Path
Follow a product from an island farm to a family.
Read the product story
Read about how pineapple jam travels on Koa Island. Then answer the questions.
From Pineapple Farm to Family Table
On Koa Island, Talia's family grows pineapples on a farm. Each morning, workers check the fruit and pick pineapples that are ripe. They place them in clean crates. Workers count the crates before a small truck carries them to the island food factory.
At the factory, workers wash, cut, and cook the pineapples with sugar in large pots. Then they pour the warm jam into jars, seal the jars, and put labels on them. The farm and factory are different places, so the product makes a stop before it reaches a store.
A delivery van carries the jars to Palm Street Store and Sunrise Grocery. Store workers place the jars on shelves. Talia's neighbor, Mr. Chen, buys a jar at Palm Street Store. At home, he spreads the jam on toast. The farm workers, factory workers, van driver, and store workers each help the product move along its path. Mr. Chen is the consumer because he buys and uses the jam.
