How Market Goods Are Made

Follow natural resources, workers, and tools from source to stall.

Read about the market

Read the passage. Then answer the questions.

Meadowgate Farmers Market

Every Saturday, producers bring goods to the Meadowgate Farmers Market. Elena's cornmeal stall starts with corn from a nearby field. Sunlight, rain, and soil help the corn grow. Elena and two workers pick the ears and let them dry. One worker feeds the dried kernels into a sheller machine. The sheller separates kernels from cobs. Then a mill grinds the kernels into cornmeal. The workers fill bags for the stall.

Omar sells wool hats. Sheep's wool is a natural resource. A worker uses shears to cut the wool. Workers wash the wool in tubs. A spinning machine twists the wool into yarn, and a knitting machine turns the yarn into hats. Omar checks each hat.

Priya makes berry jam. She gets berries from bushes. Workers wash the berries and stir them in a pot while the jam heats on a stove. Then they fill jars. Corn, wool, and berries come from nature. The people and the tools or machines help turn these resources into goods.
