Aquarium Math: Adding and Subtracting Big Numbers

Use blocks, number lines, and place value to add and subtract within 1,000.

Build with blocks

Each flat is 100, each rod is 10, and each small cube is 1. Use the blocks and place value to help you.

1.
One tank has 234 small fish. Another tank has 145 small fish. Put the blocks together to find how many fish in all.

In all:   hundreds,   tens,   ones
234 + 145 =   fish

2.
Visitors bought 357 tickets in the morning and 226 tickets in the afternoon. Add each place, then put the parts together.

Hundreds: 300 + 200 =
Tens: 50 + 20 =
Ones: 7 + 6 =
So 357 + 226 =   tickets

3.
The gift shop had 468 shark stickers. Kids bought 235 of them. Cross out blocks to subtract.

468 − 235 =   stickers left
