Meerkats on Guard

Meerkats are small animals that live in dry places in Africa. They stay in big groups, and they dig burrows under the ground.

In the morning, the air is cool, so the meerkats sit in the sun to get warm. Then they look for food. A meerkat may dig for a beetle, or it may chase a lizard.

One meerkat stands tall on its back legs. It is the guard. The guard does not hunt, but it keeps watching for danger.

Sometimes the guard sees a hawk. Then it gives a loud call. All the meerkats run into the burrow because they want to be safe.
