About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students draw informal straight-line models through the middle of scatter plot trends.
  • Students judge model fit using the closeness and overall pattern of points around a line.
  • Students distinguish linear trends from patterns that a straight line does not model well.

How to use

Use after introducing scatter plots. Have students use a ruler for the drawing, then compare their models and discuss which evidence supports a useful fit.

Curriculum

Common Core standard covered

8.SP.A.2

Know straight lines model linear trends in scatter plots, fit a line informally, and judge the fit by how close the points are.

Rooftop Solar: Checking the Fit

Fit straight-line models and decide when they describe the data well.

Sunlight and Energy

A school team studies its rooftop solar panels. Each point represents one day's measurements. Judge the overall pattern, not just individual points.

1.
The graph compares hours of direct sunlight with energy produced by a small test panel. Draw one straight line that follows the center of the trend across the observed sunlight hours.

2.
Use the plot in Question 1. A proposed line passes through (0, 0) and (5, 10). Which change would make it follow the observed trend more closely?
  • A. Make it rise less steeply as sunlight increases.
  • B. Keep its steepness and move it to the left.
  • C. Make it slope downward as sunlight increases.
  • D. Keep its steepness and move it upward.
3.
Use the plot in Question 1. Select the two observations that would most strongly challenge its current straight-line trend if added to the data.

At 9 hours, the panel produces 9 kWh.At 9 hours, the panel produces 2 kWh.At 2 hours, the panel produces 9 kWh.At 5 hours, the panel produces 6 kWh.
