About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students build uniform models for equally likely repair appointments and find event probabilities.
  • Students compare model probabilities with observed frequencies and explain chance variation.
  • Students adjust a uniform model when available appointments change.

How to use

Have students work through the booking model before examining the trial record. Discuss how equal probabilities differ from equal observed counts.

Curriculum

Common Core standard covered

7.SP.C.7.a

Build a uniform probability model, where every outcome is equally likely, use it to find probabilities, and compare probabilities from a model to observed frequencies and explain differences.

Weekend Bike Repair: Test the Booking Model

Build equal-chance models and compare them with trial results.

Build the Booking Model

Priya and Mateo run a weekend bike-repair business. Use the booking information below. Write probabilities as fractions.

For Saturday, each student offers appointments at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., and noon. An appointment outcome includes both the student's name and the time. All eight appointments are available.
1.
Which procedure makes all eight appointment outcomes equally likely?
  • A. Choose Priya twice as often as Mateo, then choose one of their four times equally.
  • B. Choose a student fairly, then always assign that student's earliest appointment.
  • C. Choose noon half the time, then choose fairly between the two students.
  • D. Choose a student with a fair coin, then choose one of their four times equally.
For questions 2–10, use a uniform model in which each of the eight appointments has probability 1/8. Each test selection starts with all eight appointments available.
