About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students combine Greek and Latin root meanings with context to determine unfamiliar word meanings.
  • Students explain how prefixes change word meanings and transfer root knowledge to related words.

How to use

Read the report, then use the word-part reference to complete the questions. Ask students to explain how context confirms their word-part analysis.

Curriculum

Common Core standard covered

L.7.4.b

Use grade-level Greek or Latin affixes and roots as clues to word meaning, such as bell in belligerent and rebel.

What the Robot’s Data Showed

1At Saturday’s regional robotics competition, students from Aldercrest School discovered that a successful machine needed more than speed. Their wheeled robot had to collect foam cylinders and deliver them to marked zones. Team members Zaina and Tomas divided responsibilities: Zaina checked the program, while Tomas examined the lifting arm. Students from several schools gathered around the practice area, comparing designs without revealing every strategy.

2The opening round tested each robot’s autonomous operation. A buzzer marked the beginning of the round. After the start signal, the machine followed its stored instructions without commands from a human driver. Judges stood beside the scoring zones with clipboards. Aldercrest’s robot reached the first cylinder, but its arm closed slightly too early and pushed the cylinder aside.

3Between rounds, Zaina studied telemetry sent from the robot to a nearby laptop. The measurements showed when the wheels turned and when the arm moved. Tomas conducted an inspection of the gripping mechanism, looking closely for loose connections. No broken part appeared. Together, they traced the problem to a sensor reading that made the arm react before the cylinder was within reach.

4The team decided to recalibrate the sensor, checking and adjusting its measurements again. They used a practice cylinder rather than guessing. Their prediction was that a later closing motion would allow the robot to grasp the cylinder securely. During the next round, the robot managed to transport its first cylinder across the course. A second attempt stopped when a cable slipped free, causing a malfunction in the lifting arm.

5Aldercrest finished outside the top group, but the students left with a detailed record of both attempts. Their coach praised their collaboration: each student contributed different work toward the same solution. For the school news page, Zaina chose a photograph of the team examining its laptop rather than a photograph of the scoreboard. “The score tells where we finished,” she said. “Our notes tell us what to try next.” The team plans to use those notes before its next competition.

Word-part reference: A root carries a central meaning. An affix attaches to another word part and changes its meaning or use. Combine these clues with the sentence; word parts do not always produce a complete dictionary definition.
