At the Repair Counter

Read

Read the story. Notice the difference between what Ravi promises and what he learns to promise.

At the Repair Counter

1Ravi painted REPAIRS on a board and propped it outside his family's garage. Beneath it, he added SAME-DAY SERVICE in smaller letters. He had fixed his own backpack zipper and tightened every loose drawer handle in the house. Now he pictured neighbors lining up with broken belongings, grateful that someone finally knew what to do. Before anyone arrived, he printed twenty numbered claim tickets.

2His mother inspected the table. “Nothing electrical, and no blades,” she reminded him. Ravi wrote those limits beneath his sign. He arranged screwdrivers beside a tin of washers and set aside a tray for parts. When Mr. Velez brought a desk lamp, Ravi pointed to the limits instead of taking it apart. His first accepted job was a folding stool with a loose hinge.

3The stool looked simple until Ravi removed a screw and found that the wood around its hole was split. Tightening the hinge would not solve that. He set the stool behind a storage box when he heard its owner, Ms. Benton, approaching. She asked whether it was ready. Ravi picked up his screwdriver, although there was nothing useful left to tighten.

4“Not yet,” he said. Then he put the screwdriver down. “Actually, I can't finish this safely with what I have.” He showed her the split and explained why the hinge would loosen again. Ms. Benton listened while holding her empty shopping bag. Ravi offered to return the stool without charging her. He expected her to take it home and warn everyone about his shop.

5Instead, Ms. Benton asked whether he could replace the missing pull on her sewing-box drawer. She said, “You told me what was wrong when you could have sent me away with a stool that only looked fixed.” Ravi found a wooden knob in his supplies. He checked that its screw would not poke through the drawer. Ms. Benton waited beside the worktable.

6That evening, Ravi crossed out SAME-DAY SERVICE. On each remaining ticket, he added spaces for “problem found” and “next step.” He also made a rule: he would examine an item before promising a deadline. His mother offered to repaint the sign, but he left the crossed-out words visible. “They remind me what to ask before I say yes,” he told her.

7The next Saturday, three neighbors came, not the crowd Ravi had imagined. He returned one item untouched, repaired two, and wrote clear notes on every ticket. When a fourth neighbor asked how long a repair would take, Ravi reached for the item instead of the clock.
