About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students interpret how equivalent expressions reveal fixed amounts, shared quantities, and rates of change.
  • Students use rewritten expressions to compare mission plans and describe percent relationships.

How to use

Use after students practice combining like terms and the distributive property. Ask students to connect each rewritten part to its meaning in the simulation, not just check the arithmetic.

Curriculum

Common Core standard covered

7.EE.A.2

See how rewriting an expression in another form shows how quantities relate, such as a + 0.05a = 1.05a for a 5% raise.

Mission Simulation: Read the Rewrites

Use equivalent expressions to uncover relationships in a space-camp mission.

Read the Mission Models

All quantities describe a space-camp simulation, not an actual spacecraft. Use each rewrite to interpret the quantities.

1.
A team divides 18x + 30 minutes of communication time equally among six windows. Rewriting (18x + 30)/6 as 3x + 5 shows the time in each window. What does the 5 represent?
  • A. Each window has 5 minutes of time altogether.
  • B. Each window receives 5 minutes from the fixed 30 minutes.
  • C. Each window gains 5 minutes when x increases by 1.
  • D. All six windows share 5 fixed minutes altogether.
2.
Seven training rounds originally last n minutes each. Each round is extended by 2 minutes. The added time is 7(n + 2) − 7n.

Rewrite the expression as a number. How much time is added, regardless of n?   minutes

3.
A simulator starts with p energy units and has 0.65p units left after a drill. Rewriting 0.65p as p − 0.35p reveals which relationship?
  • A. The drill used 35% of the starting energy.
  • B. The drill left 35% of the starting energy.
  • C. The drill used 65% of the starting energy.
  • D. The drill used 35 energy units in total.
