Our Bug Hotel

Our class wanted to help the insects that live around our school. Mr. Novak showed us photos of bug hotels on the big screen. A bug hotel is a wooden frame packed with natural materials. Small insects can crawl into the gaps to rest, hide, and stay safe through the cold months. We all voted to build one.

First we needed supplies. Jonah brought a bag of pinecones from his yard. Marisol found dry leaves, sticks, and strips of bark under the oak trees by the parking lot. I collected hollow plant stems, a bundle of straw, and two old bricks with holes in them. Mr. Novak brought scrap wood from his garage.

On Tuesday afternoon we got to work. Mr. Novak put the frame together with screws. It had four shelves and a slanted roof to keep out the rain. Jonah snipped the stems into short pieces, Marisol stuffed the shelves with leaves, and I tucked pinecones into the corners. We packed every space tightly so nothing would fall out. Our hands were sticky with pine sap by the end of the afternoon.

Next we chose a spot for our hotel. Mr. Novak said that many small insects like places that stay sheltered from wind and rain. We picked a shady corner by the back fence where it is quiet. The fence blocks the strong wind that blows across the field. Jonah and I set the hotel on two flat stones so it would not sit in puddles.

Now we check on our hotel every Friday. So far we have seen a ladybug, two shiny beetles, and a tiny spider. Spiders are not insects, but Mr. Novak says they are welcome guests too. Next spring we hope to find even more visitors in the hollow stems.

Building the hotel was hard work. Mr. Novak says other classes can build hotels of their own next year. I want to make a small one at home with my little brother.
