Strikes and Spares: Word Jobs in a Bowling Play

Explain what interjections, conjunctions and prepositions do in a short play.

Read the play

Read the play. Each numbered line is a speaking part or a stage direction. Stage directions are in parentheses.

Lane Seven

1(A busy bowling alley on a Friday night. Pins clatter on every lane. Paloma, her cousin Jun, and Grandpa Amos stand beside lane seven. Music plays from speakers above the snack counter.)

2JUN: Ugh, these rental shoes are two sizes too big! My feet slide around inside them.

3GRANDPA AMOS: Tie the laces tight, and you will be fine. (He lifts a green ball from the rack.) Watch closely, because I have a secret move.

4(Grandpa Amos rolls the ball. It curves toward the gutter but swerves back at the last moment. All ten pins crash down.)

5PALOMA: Whoa! A strike on your very first try!

6GRANDPA AMOS: I have been bowling since I was your age. (He winks at Jun.) Your turn, Jun.

7(Jun steps to the line. He swings his arm, but the ball slips from his fingers and rolls backward toward the chairs.)

8JUN: Oops! Sorry, Grandpa. Did it hit your toes?

9GRANDPA AMOS: Phew, it missed me by an inch. Try again, and keep your eyes on the arrows.

10(Jun rolls again. The ball wobbles down the lane and knocks over three pins.)

11JUN: Aw, only three. Paloma will beat me for sure. I should have stayed home and played checkers.

12PALOMA: We will see about that. I knocked down just one pin last time! (She picks up a purple ball and walks to the line.) Hmm, should I aim for the middle or the left side?

13GRANDPA AMOS: Aim between the first two pins, and roll it smoothly.

14(Paloma rolls. The ball glides along the center of the lane. Nine pins fall, and one pin wobbles but stays up.)

15PALOMA: So close! Come on, last pin!

16(On her second roll, she knocks down the last pin. The screen above the lane flashes a big slash mark. Paloma throws her arms in the air.)

17JUN: Hooray! You got a spare!

18PALOMA: We make a great team, Jun. Grandpa has the secret move, and we have the loudest cheers!
