About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students graph daily shadow measurements and describe the pattern across one day.
  • Students graph daylight, nighttime, and seasonal star data to identify repeating sky patterns.
  • Students use table evidence to make predictions about daily and seasonal sky observations.

How to use

Read the field journal and data tables together. Have students make the two graphs, then ask them to cite numbers when explaining daily and seasonal patterns.

Curriculum

NGSS standard covered

5-ESS1-2

The Autumn Farm Stand Sky Journal

Graph sky records and use evidence to find daily and seasonal patterns.

Read the field journal

Read Imani's field journal and data record. Use the measurements to answer the questions.

Imani's Notes at the Autumn Farm Stand

Imani kept a field journal while helping at an autumn farm stand. She placed a one-meter post beside the stand and measured its shadow on a clear day. The post stayed in the same place, and she used the same measuring tool each time. She measured at 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., noon, 2:00 p.m., and 4:00 p.m.

The journal also records sunrise and sunset on four dates. Imani rounded the length of daylight and nighttime to the nearest whole hour for her table. Each date represents one full day. On each date, daylight hours and nighttime hours add to about 24 hours.

At 8:30 p.m., Imani watched the sky from the same spot during eight clear nights in each month. She counted how many nights she could identify Group A and Group B. A group was counted when its pattern of stars was visible in the sky. A cloudy night was not included in the eight clear-night observations.

Daily shadow record for the one-meter post
Time | 8:00 a.m. | 10:00 a.m. | noon | 2:00 p.m. | 4:00 p.m.
Shadow length (cm) | 72 | 43 | 18 | 36 | 68
1.
Make a line graph of all five shadow measurements. Put the times in order on the horizontal axis. Label the vertical axis “Shadow length (cm)” and use equal steps from 0 to 80. Plot and connect the five points. Add a title.
