The Valemont Map Packet

Use different maps to study one mountain town.

Read the map packet

Read the descriptions of the maps of Valemont. Then answer the questions using evidence from the packet.

Five Maps of Valemont

Valemont is a small mountain town. A map packet helps the town council study the area. Each map shows a different kind of information, even though all five maps cover the same town.

The physical map shows land and water. Mount Kestrel rises north of Valemont. Echo Creek flows along the town's west side and then turns south. Redstone Pass is east of town. Darker shading marks steeper land. The darkest shading is near the upper slopes of Mount Kestrel. The land around Redstone Pass is shown with lighter shading.

The political map shows boundaries made for government. A line through the middle of Valemont separates North Ward from South Ward. Both wards are inside the town boundary. The map does not show how steep the land is or how many people live in each ward.

The population map uses colors and labels to show the number of residents. North Ward has 1,200 residents. South Ward has 2,700 residents. These numbers describe people, not the size or height of a landform.

The climate map divides the town into two snowfall zones. The northern zone averages 48 inches of snow each winter, while the southern zone averages 31 inches. The resource map marks a forest on the northern slopes, a stone quarry near Redstone Pass, and the creek as a source of fresh water. These maps help people ask different questions about the same place.

  • D. South, along the creek
2.
A trail crew wants to avoid the steepest land while traveling east from Valemont. Which destination is the better choice according to the physical map?
  • A. Redstone Pass, because its land is shown lighter
  • B. Mount Kestrel, because it is the closest landform
  • C. Echo Creek, because water marks a steep slope
  • D. North Ward, because ward lines show elevation
