Cutting the pan

Each fraction bar is a pan of brownies. The shaded pieces have frosting.

1.
The pan is cut into 3 equal pieces. 1 piece has frosting.

Mr. Diaz cuts every piece into 4 smaller equal pieces.

1/3 = (1 × 4)/(3 × 4) =  /12

2.
This pan is cut into 4 equal pieces. 3 pieces have frosting.

Mr. Diaz cuts every piece into 2 smaller equal pieces.
