About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way.
  • Students record each decomposition as an equation and check it with a fraction bar.
  • Students decompose mixed numbers into sums of wholes and fractions with the same denominator.

How to use

Use after students can add fractions with like denominators. Let them shade fraction bars in different colors to show each runner's part before writing the equation.

Relay Race Legs: Split a Fraction Many Ways

Break a race distance into sums of fractions in different ways.

Split the course

Each relay team splits its course into parts. Every runner runs one part. Fill in each sum.

1.
Team Blue's course is 4/6 of a mile. Each runner on Team Blue runs 1/6 of a mile.

4/6 = 1/6 + 1/6 + 1/6 + 1/6, so Team Blue needs   runners.

2.
Team Red's course is 5/8 of a mile. Dev runs 2/8 of a mile. Carmen runs the rest. How far does Carmen run?

5/8 = 2/8 +  /8

3.
Team Green's course is 7/10 of a mile. Three runners share it. Finish both ways to split the course.

Way 1: 7/10 = 2/10 + 2/10 +  /10
Way 2: 7/10 = 5/10 + 1/10 +  /10
