About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students compare long-term temperature and rainfall information from three world regions.
  • Students describe regional climates using evidence from graphs.
  • Students distinguish climate patterns from the weather on a single day.

How to use

Read the passage together and review the graph units. Have students use all three graphs to prepare an evidence-based description for the wool barn display.

The Wool Barn Climate Board

Use climate records to compare sheep-farming regions around the world.

1. Explore the Temperature Records

Read the passage. Use the two temperature graphs to answer questions 1–4. °F means degrees Fahrenheit.

A Display Beside the Wool

At a sheep farm, workers are turning part of the wool barn into a visitor center. Beside the wool samples, they want a board about climates in places where sheep are raised. They have chosen three regions: southwestern Ireland in Europe, inland Australia, and the eastern South Island of New Zealand.

Climate describes the usual weather patterns in a place over many years. Weather describes conditions at a particular time, such as a rainy afternoon. A single hot day does not tell the whole climate story.

For this activity, the board uses made-up but realistic climate records covering 20 years. The records represent one farm area in each region, not an entire country. Each temperature bar shows the average for one month across those years. An average helps describe what was typical, even though individual days were warmer or cooler.

The rainfall graph shows the average total rain in one year. It does not show when that rain fell. The workers need accurate labels for the board. Help them compare both temperature and rainfall, and check which claims the records support.
