Text A: Spiders That Build Webs
1Many spiders are web builders. A web builder makes silk inside its body and pulls it out through small parts called spinnerets. Then it uses the silk to spin a web made of many thin lines. Some webs look like big round wheels.
2A web is a trap for food. A web builder often waits on or near its web. A flying insect bumps into the web and gets stuck on the sticky silk. The spider feels the web shake, and it hurries over to wrap its meal in more silk. Most web builders eat insects such as flies. Like every spider, a web builder has eight legs.
Text B: Spiders That Hunt
1Not every spider builds a web. Some spiders are hunters. They look for food instead of waiting for it to get stuck. A hunter has to find its food itself. A wolf spider runs across the ground to catch an insect. A jumping spider leaps onto its meal.
2Hunters need sharp eyes. A jumping spider has big eyes at the front of its head, and it sees very well. It watches an insect carefully and then jumps. Hunting spiders do make silk, but they do not use it to trap food. A wolf spider spins silk into a small case for its eggs.
3Most hunters eat insects such as flies and crickets. A hunting spider has eight legs, too.
