Use word families, syllable patterns and ending rules to spell words for the school store.
Word families and syllable patterns
Jamal and Rosa make the signs for the school store. Use the spelling tips to help them.
Spelling tip: Words in the same word family share a spelling pattern. Store and more are in the -ore family.
1.
Each answer is in the -ore word family. Write the word that fits each clue.
1. points you earn in a game: 2. the land at the edge of the sea: 3. a small job you do at home:
2.
Which word rhymes with store but is not spelled with the -ore pattern?
Spelling tip: In a two-syllable word, listen to the first vowel. A short vowel sound is usually followed by two consonants, as in kit-ten and bas-ket. A long vowel sound often ends the first syllable, and only one consonant comes next, as in pi-lot and mu-sic.
3.
Say each word from the store shelves. Sort the words by the vowel sound in the first syllable.
4.
Write the missing consonant or consonants in each word. Think about the first vowel sound: is it short or long?
1. buon (a small round thing that keeps a shirt closed) 2. tuip (a spring flower shaped like a cup) 3. hay (feeling glad) 4. tier (a big wild cat with stripes)
Ending rules
Think about what happens to a base word when you add an ending.
Plural rules 1. Add -s to most nouns: pen, pens. 2. Add -es to nouns that end in s, x, ch or sh: dish, dishes. 3. If a noun ends in a consonant and y, change the y to i and add -es: berry, berries. 4. If a vowel comes just before the y, add only -s: day, days.
5.
How do you make each word plural? Sort the words.
6.
Write the plural form of the word in parentheses.
1. The store sells bright (pouch) for pencils. 2. Mia paid with six (penny) . 3. Two (tray) hold the erasers.
Adding -er and -est: The same kinds of rules work for -er and -est. Change y to i (funny, funnier). Double the last letter after a short vowel (sad, saddest). Drop the silent e (nice, nicer).
7.
Add the ending to the base word in parentheses. Write the new word.
1. This is the (tiny + est) eraser in the jar. 2. This marker has a (thin + er) tip than that one. 3. This is the (wide + est) ribbon on the shelf.
8.
Rosa is making a price tag for sew-on patches. Which spelling is correct?
9.
Circle the three plurals that are spelled correctly.
Fix the store sign
Jamal made this sign, but the three underlined words are spelled wrong.
