About this worksheet
What students practice
- Students judge designs that reduce damage from strong winds using test evidence.
- Students compare design results with damage and cost goals.
- Students explain how evidence supports a design choice and a next test.
How to use
Read the orchard team's test notes together, then have students use the graph, records, and goals to judge the designs. Ask students to cite numbers in both written responses.
Curriculum
NGSS standard covered

Wind Screens for the Orchard Harvest
Use test evidence to judge designs that protect apples from strong winds.
Test the orchard screens
Read the notes about the orchard harvest. Use the graph and the notes to answer the questions.
A Windy Harvest Problem
During apple harvest, workers place small baskets of picked apples near the orchard road. Strong winds can tip baskets and knock apples onto the ground. The orchard team wants a design that reduces this damage.
The team built four small screens beside model baskets. Design A had an open frame. Design B had a low woven wall. Design C had a tall solid wall. Design D had a short slatted wall. The team used the same six baskets, the same number of model apples, and the same fan distance for each design.
In Test 1, the fan blew for 30 seconds. The team counted the apples knocked out of the baskets. In Test 2, the fan blew faster for 45 seconds. The team kept the baskets, apples, and fan distance the same. In Test 2, A had 12 apples knocked out, B had 7, C had 4, and D had 8.
The orchard's first goals are to have no more than 5 apples knocked out in Test 1, no more than 6 apples knocked out in Test 2, and a cost of 5 tokens or less. Design A costs 2 tokens, B costs 4 tokens, C costs 7 tokens, and D costs 3 tokens.
- A. Damage from strong winds
- B. Damage from a long dry season
- C. Damage from falling snow
- D. Damage from a sudden cold night
