Equal Fractions on the Class Quilt

Use quilt strips and number lines to see when two fractions are the same size.

Same-size quilt pieces

Each pair of quilt strips or round patches is the same size. Compare the shaded parts.

1.
Ava sews two quilt strips that are the same length.

The top strip is 1/2 blue. The bottom strip is  /4 blue. The blue parts are the same size, so the two fractions are equal.

2.
Ben sews two round patches that are the same size.

The first patch is 1/3 shaded. The second patch is 2/6 shaded. Are 1/3 and 2/6 equal?
  • A. No, because 2/6 has more shaded parts.
  • B. No, because thirds are bigger parts, so 1/3 is more.
  • C. Yes, because the shaded parts cover the same amount of the patch.
3.
