Animal Record Holders

Some animals are famous for being the best at something. They might be the biggest, the fastest or the tallest of all. People sometimes call these animals record holders. Here are a few of them.

The cheetah is the fastest land animal. It can run faster than a racehorse, but only for a short time. After a quick sprint, a cheetah must rest and catch its breath.

Giraffes live on the grasslands of Africa. The giraffe is the tallest animal. Its long neck helps it reach leaves high up in trees. A giraffe's legs alone are taller than many adult people.

The blue whale is the largest animal known to have ever lived. It is even heavier than the biggest dinosaurs were. Blue whales swim in oceans around the world.

Some record holders are tiny. The bee hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world. It is not much bigger than a bee, which is how it got its name.

Other animals set records for how long they live. A giant tortoise moves more slowly than most animals, but it lives much longer. Some giant tortoises have lived for more than 100 years.
