Inside a Water Mill

See how a diagram helps explain a machine.

Read the text and the diagram

Read the text. Then read the description of the diagram. A diagram is a picture with labels and arrows.

Inside a Water Mill

1Long ago, many mills used water wheels to make flour. A mill is a building where grain is ground into powder. A water mill uses the power of a flowing stream to do the work.

2The stream pushes against flat boards on the wheel. These boards are called paddles. When the paddles are pushed, the whole wheel turns. A long pole runs through the middle of the wheel, and it turns too.

3Inside the mill, the turning pole spins a heavy round stone. Workers pour grain between this stone and another one underneath. The stones crush the grain into flour. The flour then falls into a bin.

Diagram: Inside a Water Mill (described in words)

The wall: A thick line is drawn up and down in the middle of the picture. The stream and the water wheel are outside the wall. The stones, the grain box, and the flour bin are inside the wall.

Arrow 1 points from the stream to the wheel. The flat boards on the wheel are labeled paddles.

Arrow 2 curves around the wheel. A line points to the long pole in the middle of the wheel. It is labeled axle, and it goes through the wall.

Arrow 3 curves around the top stone. The stone is labeled millstone. A box above the stones is labeled grain box.

Arrow 4 points down from the stones to a box. The box is labeled flour bin.

Use the diagram

Use the text and the diagram to answer each question.

1.
Paragraph 2 says "a long pole runs through the middle of the wheel." What name does the diagram give this part?
Question 1 options
2.
Match each label from the diagram to what that part is or does.
3.
Look at where the diagram puts each part. Is it outside the wall or inside the wall?
4.
Which part of the diagram shows that the wheel turns?
Question 4 options
5.
Arrow 3 in the diagram curves around the top stone. Underline the sentence in paragraph 3 that tells what this arrow shows the stone doing.

6.
Look at the diagram. Write the number of the arrow that points down from the stones to the flour bin.

Think about the diagram

Think about how the diagram and the words work together.

7.
What does the diagram help you see that is hard to tell from the words alone?
Question 7 options
8.
According to the text and the diagram, what makes the wheel turn?
Question 8 options
9.
Pick one label or arrow in the diagram. Tell how it helps you understand how the mill works.
