How to Weave on a Cardboard Loom

A loom is a frame that holds strings while you weave. You can make a small loom from stiff cardboard and some soft yarn. Then you can be a weaver, too!

Step 1: Ask a grown-up to help you cut small notches across the top and bottom of the cardboard. Space the notches evenly, about one finger apart.

Step 2: Wrap yarn up and down the cardboard, slipping it into each notch. If the strings feel floppy, tighten them. If the cardboard starts to bend, loosen them a little.

Step 3: Tie a new piece of yarn to the first string. Weave it over one string and under the next, all the way across. Then come back the other way.

Step 4: After each row, push the yarn down gently with your fingers. This keeps the rows close together.

Step 5: When you are done, tie off the ends and lift the yarn loops off the notches. Feel the softness of the little rug you made!
