A Hallway Display

At Metro Square School in a busy city neighborhood, Ms. Chen's first-grade class planned a hallway display about the United States. Students studied four cards before choosing two for the display.

One card showed the American flag with stars and stripes. Its stars and stripes help people recognize the United States. Another showed a bald eagle, a national symbol often linked with freedom. A third showed the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. It is a landmark, or special place, and it is also a symbol of welcome and freedom. The last card showed children saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

Ms. Chen said the Pledge is a promise to be loyal to the United States and respect its ideals. Students shared, listened, and voted. They chose the flag and the Statue of Liberty and wrote a meaning under each card.
