Mei and the Inchworm

Mei and Aunt Rosa took a walk in the woods. They sat on a big log to rest.

Something tickled Mei's arm. She looked down and saw a tiny green worm. It made a hump with its back. Then it stretched out flat. Hump, stretch, hump, stretch!

"That is an inchworm," said Aunt Rosa. "It is a kind of caterpillar. One day it will turn into a moth."

The inchworm moved down Mei's arm to her thumb. Mei counted the humps it made. There were six!

"Inchworms like to eat leaves," said Aunt Rosa. So Mei held her hand next to an oak leaf. The inchworm crawled onto the leaf. "Enjoy your lunch," Mei said.
