Dragonflies Up Close

A dragonfly is an insect. It has six legs and a long, thin body. It also has four wings. Dragonflies do not sting people.

A dragonfly is a great flyer. It can zoom fast and stop in the air. It can even fly backward!

Dragonflies have very big eyes. Their eyes help them see almost all the way around. They catch small bugs, like mosquitoes, while they fly.

A dragonfly starts its life in the water. A young dragonfly often lives in a pond or a stream. It cannot fly yet. When it is ready, it climbs out of the water. Its old skin splits open, and a grown dragonfly with wings comes out.
