Stone Soup by the Boats
In this original retelling of the traditional European folktale Stone Soup, a traveler at a harbor makes a meal with vegetables shared by neighbors.
Play the quiz as a gameAt the harbor, Lale had a pot but no food. She was hungry. Her sign had the heading “Stone Soup.”
She washed a smooth stone. She put it in water in her pot. “Who can help make soup?” she asked.
Neighbor Ada brought peas. “These will help,” she said. She put them in the pot.
Neighbor Bo brought corn. Neighbor Inez brought beans. Lale stirred the hot soup.
At last, the soup was ready. Lale took out the stone. The neighbors sat with her. Each got a bowl.
Inez drew their meal. Her picture had the caption “We made soup together.” The food came from the neighbors, not the stone!
