The Cocoa Cloud

Mila uses a heading and caption to learn how cooling vapor above hot cocoa forms tiny droplets.

Mila held a mug of hot cocoa on a cold morning. A small cloud hovered above the mug. Mila wondered where it came from. The heading on her class card said, “A Cocoa Cloud.” A caption under the picture said, “Cooling vapor makes tiny droplets.”

Hot cocoa warms the air above it. This warm, wet air has water vapor. When the vapor rises and cools, it can condense into tiny droplets. The droplets gather, so we can see a little cloud.

Mila’s problem was not knowing why the cloud appeared. She read the heading and caption, then watched the mug. Now she knew: hot cocoa makes vapor, and cooling makes droplets. The cloud is not smoke.
