A Magnet at the Supply Tray

A simple classroom test shows which object a magnet can attract and explains that magnets do not pull every kind of metal.

Play the quiz as a game

Which things in a classroom can a magnet pull? A test can help us find out.

The heading on our chart is "Magnet Test." We set out a steel paper clip, a wood block, a rubber eraser, and some foil.

We hold a magnet near each thing. The magnet can attract, or pull, the steel clip. The clip moves to the magnet.

The block and eraser do not move to it. The foil does not move to it. Our foil is made of aluminum. A magnet does not pull every kind of metal.

Our chart has a picture of the clip. Its caption says, "The steel clip moves." The test shows which thing our magnet can pull.
