A Shoe with Something to Say

Across four humorous chapters, Dalia's attempts to silence a squeaky shoe lead to an unexpected tap routine at her chess club's luncheon.

Play the quiz as a game

Chapter 1: An Uninvited Commentator Dalia had one job at the chess club's final match: collect the finished score sheets without making a sound. She wore her polished dress shoes for the club luncheon afterward. Unfortunately, her right shoe had arrived with an opinion. Each step produced a squeak that seemed to announce, "Interesting move!"

She tried tiptoeing. Squeak. She tried walking on her heel. A longer squeak. Several players glanced up, and Dalia's cheeks warmed. She retreated to the empty dining room and set the papers down. Through the doorway, Omari, who was arranging napkins, raised an eyebrow. "Your shoe has more to say than our announcer."

Chapter 2: Repairs That Weren't Dalia wiped the sole with a dry cloth, but the shoe still squeaked against the wooden floor. Loosening the laces changed nothing. She experimented with shorter steps. Now it squeaked twice as often. "Excellent," she said. "I've taught it to interrupt."

Omari tapped his heel twice, then waited for her next squeak. Tap, tap, squeak. Dalia stared at him. He repeated the pattern, and this time she stepped on purpose. "I take tap lessons," he explained. "That sounds less like a broken shoe and more like a musical partner." For the first time that morning, Dalia laughed with the shoe instead of at it.

Chapter 3: A Job for the Noise They had twenty minutes before lunch. Omari taught Dalia a short sequence: heel, toe, shuffle, pause. Their hard soles clicked against the boards, while her squeak supplied a ridiculous finishing note. Dalia wanted to race through the steps, but her foot tangled with the rhythm. They slowed down until each sound had its own place.

Soon they linked three patterns into a complete routine. A solemn bow came first, followed by traveling steps and a turn. At the end, Omari froze like a chess king while Dalia circled him, squeaking importantly. The club organizer peeked in after the match. "Could you perform that before dessert?" she asked. Dalia looked down at her shoe. "Apparently, it accepts bookings."

Chapter 4: The Loudest Thank You After sandwiches, Dalia and Omari stood before the diners. Dalia recognized the players who had looked up during the match, and her stomach fluttered. Then Omari tapped twice. She answered with a squeak. The familiar pattern steadied her, and they moved through every part they had practiced. Their final circling steps brought laughter and applause.

Dalia bowed, carefully keeping both feet still. She could finish without another noise. Then she grinned and pressed her right foot down for one last squeak. This time, every face turned toward her because she wanted it to. "Thank you," she told the shoe afterward. "Tomorrow, however, we're visiting the repair shop. Even a star deserves a day off."
