Three Pockets of Color

In an animated story, a stubborn chameleon builds a seedpod game for a tree fair. Changes in the film’s colors, framing, and sounds reveal how he learns to value his friends’ ideas.

Play the quiz as a game

The animated story opens on a branch above a leafy clearing. A heading reads, “A Perfect Straight Line.” Zeki, a chameleon, is building a seedpod game for the tree fair. Players will roll pods down a track toward three woven pockets. Zeki wants every piece of the track straight. The screen glows with his favorite crimson, a strong red. Even the leaves are red, while his two helpers appear as small gray shapes.

Bina, a beetle, brings a flexible strip of bark. “We could bend this into side paths,” she suggests. Tumo, a tree frog, offers a broad leaf. “And this could steer the pods.” Zeki shakes his head. “Straight is neat. Neat is best.” He lines up his rigid sticks, which will not bend. Each stick lands with an identical tick. The camera moves close until his track fills the screen.

At the first test, Zeki releases three pods. Tick, tick, tick: each follows the same route into the middle pocket. The two outer pockets remain empty. He tilts the track left, then right, but the pods still have no separate paths to follow. “Perhaps the pockets are in the wrong places,” he says. He moves them closer together until they overlap.

The crimson drains into a muted blue, pale and dull. Zeki sits beside his crowded pockets. The camera pulls back, revealing Bina and Tumo at the edge of the clearing, still holding their unused materials. Beyond them stretches a wide patch of empty blue space. Zeki looks from the straight track to the bent bark in Bina’s feet.

“Could you show me your side paths?” he asks reluctantly, almost whispering. Bina curls the bark into two gentle channels. As she works, a thin gold line follows the curve. Tumo places his leaf at the junction, where the straight track meets the channels. He turns it like a little gate. A wash of turquoise spreads around his feet. Zeki watches instead of reaching in to correct them.

Their first shared test sends a pod between two channels. Zeki opens his mouth, then closes it. “What should we change?” he asks. Bina raises a bark edge, Tumo adjusts the leaf, and Zeki steadies the starting ramp. They test again. This time, turning the leaf sends one pod left, another right, and a third straight ahead. Each lands in a different pocket with its own dry rattle.

Now the palette, the set of colors used in the scene, expands. Violet fills the shadows, gold curls along the bark, and turquoise lights the leaf. Crimson remains on Zeki’s back, but it no longer covers everything. In a wide view, all three friends fit beside the game. Their colors stay distinct as they lean toward the same rolling pod. The three different rattles tumble into a cheerful rhythm.

At the fair, Zeki hangs a sign with the caption “Three paths, one game.” When a young gecko asks who invented it, he begins, “I—” Then he glances at Bina and Tumo. “We did.” The final image holds on the three bright pockets, each a different color, joined to the same starting ramp.
