The Gap in the Lantern Line

After an apartment courtyard lantern walk, Samira helps a friend create an illustrated sequence that shows how the walkers made room for her younger cousin.

By sunset, twelve paper lanterns glowed beneath the arch of Samira's apartment courtyard. Each lantern held a battery light inside translucent paper, which let a soft glow shine through. Samira carried hers at waist level, like the other walkers. Tonight, their neighbors would follow a short procession, a line of people moving together, through the courtyard.

Samira's younger cousin, Ivo, had decorated his lantern with silver dots. He wanted to join, but when the line started moving, he stayed beneath the arch. Samira noticed his hesitant steps: one foot forward, then back again. She remembered how large the courtyard had seemed when she first moved there.

Near the blue bench, Samira stopped. She turned toward Ivo and lifted her lantern to her shoulder so he could spot her. The other walkers stopped too. Nobody called for Ivo to hurry. Instead, they left a wide gap between the arch and the waiting line.

Ivo crossed that open space at his own pace. When he reached Samira, she lowered her lantern beside his. Together, they led the final steps to the bench. There, the neighbors spread into a crescent, a curved shape like a thin moon. Ivo stood beside Samira, his silver dots sparkling.

The next afternoon, Elian brought his sketchbook to Samira. His sister had missed the walk, so he was making an illustrated sequence to show her what happened. Beneath the heading 'Our Courtyard Lantern Walk,' he had arranged three pictures in order. 'Will these help her imagine being there?' he asked.

The first picture showed the walkers passing beneath the arch, their lanterns glowing at their waists. Samira nodded. But in the second picture, everyone was bunched tightly around Ivo. Several hands reached toward him. A caption beneath it read, 'Helping Ivo join.' Elian had drawn cheerful faces throughout the crowd.

'We were happy he came,' Samira said, 'but we didn't crowd around him. The space was the important part.' Elian rubbed out the clustered figures. He drew Samira near the bench, looking back with her lantern raised. Then he added the waiting walkers and a broad stretch of empty pavement leading from Ivo to Samira.

Elian changed the caption to 'Making room for Ivo to choose his moment.' In the third picture, he had already shown the neighbors curved around the bench, with Ivo beside Samira. She asked him to keep that arrangement. A closed circle would have hidden the open, welcoming shape she remembered.

When Ivo saw the finished sequence, he tapped the empty pavement in the middle picture. 'That's where I decided I could do it,' he said. Elian smiled. He had thought the blank space made his picture look unfinished. Now he understood that sometimes what a picture leaves open tells an important part of the story.
