Story One: The Egg Cartons
At Aunt Pilar's farm, Nadi and her cousin Ruben packed eggs on the henhouse porch. A cool breeze fluttered their job chart. Its heading said, “Pack and Check.” Beneath it, a drawing showed six eggs in a carton. The caption read, “One full carton.”
“I'll pack,” Nadi said. “So will I!” Ruben answered. Both moved eggs into cartons, reaching across each other. Soon, several cartons looked ready.
Aunt Pilar pointed to two empty spaces in one carton. The cousins had each thought the other was checking. “We shared the table, but not the responsibility,” Nadi said.
They made a plan. Ruben would fill each carton, and Nadi would inspect it to make sure it held six eggs. After three cartons, they traded jobs. By lunchtime, every carton was ready for the farm stand.
Story Two: The Bread Bags
The next Saturday, the cousins helped at Uncle Tomas's bakery. Warm air smelled of rye bread. Uncle Tomas asked them to pack cooled loaves into bags and add labels for deliveries to the library and flower shop.
Ruben wanted to prove he could manage the whole job. “I can pack and label,” he told Nadi. He juggled the tasks, setting down a loaf to find a label, then dropping the label to open a bag. Nadi waited beside a stack of empty bags.
Soon, the library's bags stood beside the flower shop's labels. Ruben stopped. “At the farm, we both grabbed one job,” he said. “Now I'm grabbing two. Will you help?” Nadi nodded. “If we agree on our jobs first.”
Nadi packed each loaf while Ruben checked the order list and attached the matching label. They worked at a steady pace, and the bags were ready when Uncle Tomas came for them. “Two pairs of hands,” Ruben said, “and this time, one clear plan.”
