The Map Beneath the Mess
Keon thinks his aunt's invention workshop is hopelessly messy until her labeled drawings reveal a careful system for finding and testing parts.
Play the quiz as a gameKeon stepped into Aunt Sada's workshop behind her house. Fabric scraps spilled over a stool. Spools crowded a tray, and rubber wheels peeked from beneath a scarf. Sada was building a machine that would slide playing cards to players when someone turned a handle. Keon had promised to help test it. First, though, he wondered how she found anything.
Sada handed him her workshop notebook. The first drawing showed the whole room: leaning stacks, curling strips of paper, and golden sunlight across the workbench. Its caption, the words beneath the picture, read, "Room to Wonder." Keon smiled. On paper, the cluttered room looked cheerful and full of possibilities. Still, he could not spot a useful part.
Then Sada turned the machine's handle. A worn wheel spun against the top card, but the card stayed in place. "We need a wheel that can grip the card better," she said. Keon glanced around. Searching this room could take longer than building another machine!
"Try the next page," Sada suggested. Under the heading "Workshop Map," a close-up drawing showed three groups of parts. Rubber wheels rested beneath the scarf beside the label "GRIP." Spools filled a tray marked "TURN." Clips stood in a cup marked "HOLD." Thin, precise arrows pointed to each hiding place. Sada had grouped the materials by what they could do, not by what they looked like.
Keon followed an arrow with his finger, then lifted the scarf. There were the wheels! He chose one with a rough edge. Sada fitted it into the machine. When Keon turned the handle, one card slid neatly across the table. Another turn sent out another card. "Your room has a plan," he said. "I just couldn't see it."
Sada drew the new wheel in her notebook and added a check mark beside it. Other wheels in the drawing had small crosses beside them. "Those slipped during an earlier trial," she explained. Keon looked back at the sunny first picture, then at the careful map. The workshop was still messy, but now he could see the thinking tucked inside it.
