Four Notes Through the Bakery Gate
A shy violinist invites two neighbors to rehearse in a bakery courtyard and discovers that she can help lead the group, even while feeling nervous.
Play the quiz as a gameDalia had agreed to play her violin at Saturday's concert in the courtyard behind the neighborhood bakery. At home, her tune flowed smoothly. In front of other people, her bow trembled. She wanted neighbors to join her, but asking them felt harder than playing the trickiest part.
In her notebook, she wrote the heading “Courtyard Practice.” Below it, she drew three chairs in a circle. The caption under her sketch said, “Close enough to hear one another.” A small group seemed less frightening than a row of listeners.
At the bakery gate, Dalia spotted Ines carrying a flute case. Her first words came out in a whisper. “Would you practice just four notes with me?” she asked. Ines smiled and stepped through the gate. Dalia's shoulders loosened.
Mr. Bae stopped beside them. “I like singing, but I don't read music,” he said. Dalia almost told him they needed players. Then she remembered how hard it had been to ask for company. “You could hum after I play,” she suggested.
Their first try sounded tangled. Ines began before Dalia, and Mr. Bae could not hear which notes to hum. Dalia lowered her violin. Perhaps inviting people had been a mistake. She glanced at the chairs in her sketch.
“Let's move closer,” she said. “I'll play the four notes alone. Then we'll try them together.” She tapped her foot slowly to give them a steady beat. When Ines stumbled, Dalia waited instead of rushing ahead. They tried again, and this time their sounds fit together.
By Friday, the three neighbors could perform the whole tune. Ines asked if they should practice facing empty chairs, as if an audience were there. Dalia hesitated, then nodded. Her bow still shook at the beginning, but she kept going while her friends joined in.
On Saturday, neighbors settled into the courtyard seats. Dalia felt a flutter in her stomach. She looked at Ines and Mr. Bae, lifted her bow, and tapped the familiar beat. This time, she was the one who helped everyone begin.
