Milo, Sit!

A boy helping at a dog trick class follows commands meant for a dog with the same name, leading to a funny mix-up.

Play the quiz as a game

On Saturday morning, Milo Chen went to the pet center to help Aunt Rosa with a dog trick class. A sign by the door had the heading “Trick Time.” Milo's job was to set out small cones before the dogs arrived.

Soon, a woman came in with a shaggy dog. While she hung up her coat, the dog trotted over to Aunt Rosa. Milo carried the last cone across the room.

“Milo, sit!” Aunt Rosa called. Milo sat on a nearby bench. The dog sat beside her. “Milo, stay!” Milo froze on the bench. So did the dog.

Aunt Rosa turned around. “Why are you sitting over there? We still need the water bowls.” “You told me to sit and stay,” Milo said. The woman laughed softly. “My dog's name is Milo, too!” Milo grinned. “Does he know how to set out cones?”

Aunt Rosa chuckled at the mix-up. “I should have said which Milo I meant.” She made a plan. During class, she would call her helper “Milo Chen” and the dog “Milo Pup.” Now each Milo would know when she was speaking to him.

“Milo Chen, please bring the bowls,” she said. This time, the boy moved and the dog waited. Class went smoothly after that. At the end, the woman took a photo of both Milos sitting on the bench. Aunt Rosa put it on the class board with the caption “Two good listeners!”
