At the campground, Mina helped Uncle Luis set up at site twelve. Her cousins would arrive for lunch. Mina wanted to make their campsite easy to find. “I'll make a welcome flag!” she said.

She drew a yellow sun on cloth. Then she fastened the cloth to a short stick with string. Uncle Luis helped her stand it beside the picnic table. The flag drooped behind a bench, but Mina thought its bright color would catch everyone's eye.

Soon her cousin Tavi came along the campground path. He walked right past site twelve. “Tavi!” Mina called. He turned back. “I was looking for your flag,” he said. Mina frowned. Her welcome plan had not worked.

Uncle Luis asked, “What can you see from the path?” Mina walked over. The table hid most of her flag. “It needs to be visible,” she said. “People need to see it before they pass us.”

Mina and Tavi moved the flag to the front of their campsite. Uncle Luis fixed the stick firmly in the ground. Mina added a big number twelve to the cloth. When the other cousins arrived, they spotted the flag and waved. Mina waved back. Her plan worked at last.

After lunch, Mina put a photo in her notebook under the heading “Camp Memories.” She wrote a caption below it: “Our flag brought the family together.”
