Samira Takes Aim
During her first bowling visit, Samira discovers that a ramp can help her roll the ball, but she still needs to check where it points.
Play the quiz as a gameThe opening illustration shows Samira and Aunt Inez at a bowling alley. Long wooden lanes stretch toward white pins. Samira wears bright rental shoes. Above them, a heading reads, “Samira Takes Aim.” Samira had watched bowling before, but today she would try it.
Samira rolled a ball with both hands. It bumped into the gutter before reaching the pins. “What if every turn goes like that?” she asked. The next illustration shows her holding another ball tightly against her middle.
Aunt Inez brought over a ramp. “This can help the ball roll farther,” she said. Samira pushed a ball gently down its slope. It rolled quickly but landed in the gutter again. Samira folded her arms. “It didn't work!”
In the third illustration, the ramp points toward the gutter. Aunt Inez crouched beside Samira. “Look along the ramp. Where is it sending the ball?” Samira bent down. Now she could see. “We need to aim it at the pins!”
Together, they turned the ramp a little. Samira checked its direction before giving the ball another push. This time, the ball rolled down the middle and knocked over three pins. “Three!” Samira cheered. “I made them fall!”
In the final illustration, Samira stands beside the straight ramp, her fist raised. The caption reads, “A new way to aim.” She beamed at Aunt Inez. Then she reached for another ball, ready to try again.
