The Hidden Shape of a Basketball Bounce

A three-frame diagram reveals how a basketball changes shape when it hits the court and rebounds.

Play the quiz as a game

A basketball bounce happens so quickly that you may miss an important change. The ball does not stay perfectly round! To see what happens during a dribble, look at a diagram under the heading “Inside a Bounce.”

The diagram has three numbered pictures. Each picture is called a frame. Frame 1 shows the ball falling toward the court. A blue arrow points down beside it. The arrow shows the direction the ball is moving.

Frame 2 shows the moment the ball meets the court's hard surface. The bottom of the ball looks flatter. The cover changes shape, and the air inside gets squeezed into a smaller space. This change is too quick to notice easily during a game.

Frame 3 shows the ball moving up, with a red arrow pointing upward. As the ball returns toward its round shape, it pushes against the floor. The floor pushes back on the ball, helping send it up. This upward bounce is called a rebound.

Beside the diagram is a photograph of a player dribbling. In the photo, the ball is beside the player's knee. The caption says, “A dribble is a series of bounces.” The photo shows what dribbling looks like in a game. The diagram helps explain what happens at the floor.

The two images do different jobs. The photograph gives a real example of the skill. The diagram separates one fast bounce into three steps. Its changing shapes and arrows help you follow a motion that your eyes might miss.
