Play the quiz as a gameIn 1889, Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr opened Hull House in Chicago. It was a place where neighbors could meet and learn. Many neighbors had come from other countries.
Some grown-ups wanted to learn English. But they worked during the day. How could they go to class? Hull House offered classes in the evening, after work.
In English classes, neighbors could practice reading, writing, and speaking English. Practice means doing something again to get better at it. Learning English could help them talk with people at work or read signs.
Jane Addams did not teach every class herself. She helped bring people together so neighbors had a place to learn. Hull House offered other classes, too, such as art and music.
Picture grown-ups learning together. A caption is a short line about a picture. A caption for this picture could say, "Neighbors learn after work."
