Up Goes the Car, Down Goes the Weight
Two diagrams use arrows to show how an elevator car and a heavy weight move in opposite directions.
Play the quiz as a gameAn elevator can carry people up to a high floor. How does it move? A diagram can help us see parts hidden behind the walls.
The heading says, "One Kind of Elevator." The first diagram shows a car. This is the room people ride in. A heavy weight hangs beside it.
Ropes join the car and the weight. The ropes go over a wheel at the top. A motor turns the wheel to move the ropes.
A blue arrow points up beside the car. A red arrow points down beside the weight. The caption says, "The car goes up as the weight goes down." The weight helps the motor lift the car.
The next diagram shows the return trip. Now the blue arrow points down. The red arrow points up. The car and the weight trade directions!
The car stops at a floor. Then the doors open so people can get in or out.
