Omi's Little Puffs

A young dragon learns that gentle heat and time work better than one huge puff when baking biscuits.

Play the quiz as a game

Omi was a young dragon with a big puff. One morning, she helped Aunt Zella bake biscuits in their hilltop kitchen.

A card by the oven had the heading “Berry Biscuits.” Under a picture, the caption said, “Golden tops.” Omi wanted her biscuits to look like that.

“I can heat the oven fast!” said Omi. She blew one huge puff into it. Soon, the biscuit tops were dark. The middles were still sticky dough. Omi lowered her head. “My big puff did not help.”

“Let's try gentle heat,” said Aunt Zella. “Use little puffs, and give the biscuits time.” They put a fresh tray in the oven.

Omi blew a small puff. She waited, then blew another. She watched the tops turn gold. Aunt Zella checked the middles. This time, they were baked through.

After the biscuits cooled, Omi took a bite. The middle was soft, not sticky. “A bigger puff isn't better for every job,” she said. “This job needs little puffs and time.”
