One Little Part at a Time

Elio wants to join a courtyard kazoo concert. By practicing one small part at a time, he gets ready to play a whole song.

Play the quiz as a game

Elio saw a poster by the courtyard gate. Its heading said, “Kazoo Concert.” His aunt would lead the songs on Saturday.

“Can I join?” Elio asked. Aunt Lin gave him a kazoo. Elio blew into it. He heard air, but no music. He blew harder. Still no tune!

“Try to hum,” said Aunt Lin. “Let your voice make the sound.” Elio hummed into the kazoo. It made a funny buzz. He grinned and tried the song, but he lost his place.

“I want to play it right now,” he said. “You can practice a little each day,” said Aunt Lin. “Start with one small part.”

Each afternoon, Elio played one part slowly. Then he added the next part. Soon he could play the whole song with a steady beat.

At the concert on Saturday, Elio sat beside Aunt Lin in the courtyard. He played the song from start to end. “I was not ready at first,” he said. “Those little tries helped me get here!”
